Breast Reduction Surgery Procedure StepsMarch 13, 2018
Breast reduction surgery is a major body contouring procedure aimed at reducing the size and volume of breasts, in order to make them more proportionate to the rest of the body. At the time of initial consultation, the surgeon will inform the patient about various steps involved in the surgery process.
Once the patient has a clear understanding of the surgical procedure, she is likely to feel more confident and make better decisions about the surgery. The patient may also review a few photographs or videos of the breast reduction surgery procedure at the surgeon’s office.
Outstanding, kind, and board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie MD provides breast reduction surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities across the horizon.
The first step that will create a good base for breast reduction surgery is a detailed consultation with the surgeon. The surgeon will determine the patient’s candidacy for breast reduction and evaluate her personal aesthetic needs and goals at this stage. They will also provide the patient with pre-and post-surgical instructions. A general health exam will be performed. Specialized mammograms may be ordered in certain cases.
General anesthesia is usually the preferred choice for a major cosmetic surgery procedure such as breast reduction. Local anesthesia with IV sedation is also sometimes used, depending on the situation. The patient will be placed under anesthesia once she is brought into the operating room.
An anesthesiologist or a registered anesthetist nurse will perform general anesthesia. They will be present throughout the surgical procedure to monitor the patient’s response to anesthesia. Once the patient wakes up after the procedure, she will not have any recollection of the surgery.
The surgeon may use one of these three incision techniques: anchor shaped incision, vertical incision or a scar-less incision to perform the breast reduction surgery. Anchor incision is made around the lower half of the areola border, running vertically down the breast, and then horizontally across the breast crease.
In the case of vertical incision, the incision is created around the lower half of the areola, continuing vertically down to the breast. In case of scar-less incision technique, the surgeon will create very small incisions, placed in natural breast creases.
Excision of Loose Skin and Fat
Excess fat tissue and loose skin will be removed through the lower part of the breasts through the incisions. If the patient has no glandular tissue and only fatty tissue in the breasts, the surgeon may apply liposuction technique, which will be less invasive. In case liposuction, scarring will be reduced, recovery will be faster and tissue trauma is minimal.
Nipples may be repositioned to a raised level in order to create a natural look. The nipple will be detached from the breast and placed onto a more youthful location.
Removable or dissolvable sutures are generally used by the surgeon to carefully close the incisions after the surgical procedure. Profound and dedicated cosmetic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie MD receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and other cities and towns in this part of the southwest for breast reduction surgery.
